Welcome to the Teacher Leadership Graduate Program

How does real and meaningful change happen in P-12 education?  There’s only one way: through classroom teachers working together to develop and implement instructional initiatives that respond to problems in student learning and achievement.  Envision yourself as the person who sees the opportunities for change, analyzes the data and brings ideas to your colleagues, and helps implement and evaluate those initiatives.

Benefits of Becoming a Teacher Leader

Teacher Leaders know how to analyze trends in the environment as well as in classroom data, articulate and inspire a vision for change, foster collaboration and communication, and develop curriculum, instructional and evaluation strategies.

Teacher Leaders are devoted to improving the effectiveness of their teaching practice.  Developing these skills will allow you to meaningfully effect change to improve student learning in your classroom.  But it will also allow you to lead change outside of your teaching role as the leader of a professional learning community in your building.

Master of Arts in Education, Teacher Leadership Option

The Master of Arts program in Teacher Leadership is a two-year graduate program with significant development in the fundamentals of action research, as well as the critical Teacher Leader competencies included in the Teacher Leadership Certificate program.   The culminating research project will allow you to improve practices and policies in your program, building, or district.

Teacher Leadership Certificate

The Professional Certificate in Teacher Leadership is a one-year program that develops competencies in technology, culturally responsive teaching, assessment, instructional coaching, differential instruction, and leadership.

2013 Dates & Deadlines

June 17 - Deadline to apply for admission to M.A. program (unless 2013 cohort has already been filled)

June 24 - Deadline to apply for admission to Certificate program (unless 2013 cohort has already been filled)

August 5 - Deadline to apply for admission as non degree seeking student (unless Fall 2013 classes have already been filled).

August 28 – Graduate Student Orientation, 4:30-7:30 P.M.

September 4 - Classes begin

September 17 - Census Date

November 15 - Deadline to apply for admission as non degree seeking student (unless Spring 2014 classes have already been filled).

November 25-29 - Thanksgiving Break (no classes) 

December 18 - Classes end

Do you have an idea about how your program or school could be improved?

In the Teacher Leadership program, you can pursue ideas relevant to your teaching area.  Fort Lewis College faculty will help you ground your ideas in student assessment data and develop strategies, then they will coach you through the implementation and evaluation process.

At Fort Lewis College, you will acquire the competencies of the Teacher Leader through a hybrid course format that values face-to-face interaction and relationship-building with faculty and fellow teachers. The Department of Teacher Education’s Tradition of Quality

Fort Lewis College History of Teacher EducationFort Lewis College has been teaching Four Corners teachers for almost 100 years. The Department of Teacher Education has been recognized for its quality programs by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council and the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education.   

Two of the department’s most important commitments are to the educational opportunities of diverse learners and to the art, science, and craft of teaching and learning.  

The Teacher Leadership programs have been developed in collaboration with teacher leaders, principals, and superintendents in Four Corners schools, and this collaboration will continue through the Teacher Education Graduate Program Advisory Board. The programs will be evaluated according to the Teacher Leader Model Standards.
