Culturally and Linguistically Diverse

Culturally Responsive Teaching Scholarships

These scholarships support educators in the region who are developing culturally responsive teaching practices that improve learning for multilingual students.

Award Five $1,000 scholarships
Eligibility Students admitted to the MAE in Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Education or the CLD Endorsement program
Deadline June 1 or until all scholarship funds are awarded

How to apply

  1. Write a 900- to 1,100-word personal statement explaining why you are a strong candidate for the scholarship. You may address your financial need, how the scholarship would support your education, your leadership experience or potential, and other relevant information.
  2. Email your personal statement to gradstudies@fortlewis.edu with the subject line [YOUR NAME] SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION.

Selection

Recipients are selected based on their potential to create sustainable improvements in classroom, school, or district teaching and learning. Award decisions are typically made about two weeks after the application deadline, and applicants are notified by email.

Disbursement and renewal

  • Scholarship funds are divided equally among the fall, spring, and summer terms.
  • You must be enrolled in four courses per year, including summer, to receive the scholarship.
  • If you maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, you may reapply for your second academic year.

Leading in Context

Innovative Teacher Leadership Scholarships

These scholarships support teacher leaders in the region who are developing the knowledge and skills to improve teaching and learning in their classrooms, schools, and districts.

Award Five $1,000 scholarships
Eligibility Students admitted to the MAE in Leading in Context or the Teacher Leadership Certificate program
Deadline June 1 or until all scholarship funds are awarded

How to apply

Native American Educators as Leaders Scholarship

The Native American Educators as Leaders (NAEL) Scholarship supports Native American students preparing to become teachers, administrators, and education leaders. The scholarship is intended to strengthen Native representation and leadership in education, particularly in schools serving significant American Indian student populations.

Eligibility Teachers or teacher candidates pursuing a master's degree in Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Education, Principal Leadership, Special Education, Leading in Context, or Teacher Licensure at Fort Lewis College

Scholarship priorities

The NAEL Scholarship supports efforts to:

  • increase the number of teachers and administrators serving schools with significant American Indian student populations;
  • advance high-quality teaching through strong practices, innovation, and professionalism; and
  • develop educators as leaders through rigorous, multiculturally informed graduate education.

How to apply

Email a personal statement to gradstudies@fortlewis.edu with your name and the word Scholarship in the subject line.

In your personal statement:

  • introduce yourself and identify the scholarship or scholarships you are applying for;
  • describe your financial need, larger purpose, and long-term goals in education; and
  • describe the type of school or educational setting where you teach or hope to teach, such as a low-income, charter, middle, high, rural, or urban school.

Principal Leadership

These scholarships support educators in the region who are preparing to become school leaders and lead meaningful, strategic change in their educational communities.

Award Five $1,000 scholarships
Eligibility Students admitted to the MAE in Principal Leadership or Principal Licensure program
Deadline June 1 or until all scholarship funds are awarded

Inclusion Matters Scholarships

These scholarships support educators in the region who are developing the knowledge, skills, and leadership needed to improve teaching and learning for students with disabilities.

Eligibility Students admitted to the MAE in Special Education or the Special Education Endorsement program
Deadline June 1 or until all scholarship funds are awarded

Teacher Licensure

You may apply for and receive more than one Teacher Licensure scholarship. Students who receive a Make a Difference Scholarship complete their student teaching placement in a Title I school.

Robert M. Barr & Roberta Armstrong Barr Scholarships

Award Up to $3,000 per year; number of awards varies
Eligibility Colorado residents who demonstrate financial need and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
Disbursement Scholarship funds are divided equally between the fall and spring terms

Make a Difference Scholarships

Award Five $1,000 scholarships per year
Eligibility Recipients complete their student teaching placement in a Title I school where 50% or more of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch
Priority deadline June 1; applications remain open until all available funds are awarded
Disbursement Scholarship funds are divided equally between the fall and spring terms

In your personal statement:

Renewal for the Make a Difference Scholarship

Recipients must reapply each year. Students who maintain a 3.0 GPA and are teaching in a Title I school may reapply for funding in their second year.

External funding opportunities

Additional scholarships, stipends, and loan-repayment programs may be available to current and future Colorado educators. Eligibility, award amounts, and application periods are determined by the organizations that administer each program and may change.

National Board Certified Teacher Stipend $4,250 Eligible rural Colorado teachers pursuing National Board certification
Rural Alternative Licensure Stipend Up to $4,500 Educators working in eligible rural Colorado districts and completing an approved alternative licensure program.
